The Location
Foz do Arelho is small, typically Portuguese seaside village: it is still relatively undeveloped. There are restaurants and bars both on the beach and in the village. The village is on the mouth of the Obidos Lagoon - close to the working market town of Caldas da Rainha and the ancient walled town of Obidos.
Travel
Foz lies approximately 50 miles north of Lisbon. There is an easy drive via motorway (no need to traverse Lisbon). Car hire is recommended.
Bathing
Foz has a choice of beaches: on the Atlantic side is a shelving sandy beach with rollers, ideal for strong swimmers and surfers. The lagoon side has sheltered family bathing,
ideal for sunbathing and for children.
History and excursions
Foz is within easy striking distance of Caldas da Rainha, Obidos, Nazaré, São Martinho do Porto, Alcobaça and Batalha. Within easy day-tripping distance are Lisbon, Sintra, Fátima, Santarem and Coimbra. An hourly bus service runs from Caldas to Lisbon. The area is rich in history and is not yet developed and “internationalized” like the Algarve.
Golf
Opened in 1997, Praia d’el Rey Golf and Country Club was built to championship standard. With wide fairways and spectacular views, it has been described as “one of the best in Portugal”. The golf course is about 20 minutes from the apartment.
